The Classic Coat Gets a New Look
Maison Margiela’s SS18 RTW collection embodied this trend, the construction and deconstruction of a trench coat was a hit down the runway. Oversized, layers and structure, what remains is the classic trench design. Other designers that featured this on the runway for Spring/Summer 2018 were Balenciaga, Céline, Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Valentino, and Calvin Klein.

The trend was spotted on multiple runway shows in various ways including,
1 print
2 transparent
3 color
You had Balenciaga and Céline who featured more a recognizable trench construction both emphasizing on structure. Balenciaga played more with the components of a trench mixing different layers and contrasts. Céline featured khaki colored suits and coats, layers also played a major role. Alexander McQueen featured about 10 different looks with either a blazer or trench piece. Opening the collection were belted trenches with a feminine vintage floral and touches of pale rose and gold.
And we cannot go without a mention of Burberry who showcased their SS18 RTW in London, their staple piece the trench, emphasized their signature with length. Other runway looks used the classic silhouette with a sheer transparent color styled with layers. Transparent vinyl fabric is at it’s peak this upcoming spring season. Valentino won the coat layering with oversized lengthy trenches, among contrast with short jackets made of transparent vinyl for ultimate layering look. Valentino featured oversized sport jackets with a retro update.
Calvin Klein’s collection featured printed color trenches. Similar to Valentino, various looks featured puffy coats with drawstring accents were followed by the oversized trench that highlighted an assortment of bold graphic color including red and green.
