Emerging Trends From Resort 2020

Wild Wild West, Rich Embellishments, and Bold Headwear

Now that Resort 2020 has walked the runways, we can take some notes on what to expect for the holiday season. Or simply a little taste before we get the full scoop on Spring/Summer in September. And without a doubt, we will see some of these trends transcend.

A trend that could easily trickle-down is the Western Inspiration that took over Resort 2020. Versace delivered cowboy boots and studded denim. Balmain took the trend to a different level with actual desert prints including cacti, eagles, and bold tribal print. Fringe, studs, and beads fit the description. Big flat rimmed hats were among the staple accessory.

And that leads me to the next trend — Bold Headwear. Miu Miu doubled up, layering large floppy rimmed hats over baseball caps. Louis Vuitton had slick headgear resembling a swim cap. Anna Sui finished off her looks with various scarf head wraps with bows. Gucci opened the show with a statement headpiece adorned with long feathers and rhinestones.

Exaggerated Shoulders were everywhere including big puffy shoulders and capes. Chanel and LV both featured designs with accentuated fabric at the shoulders, some looking like a crop top poncho, others like a cape. I could definitely see ponchos being the next thing. I’m also here for some capes.

Some singled out items to look for include: Trouser Shorts, Bermuda Shorts, and One-Piece Windbreakers. I absolutely loved Off-White’s take on aquatic streetwear perfect for holiday. Large fishnet style garments including a smock that would lay over swim pieces or other clothing. I could see this being a must-have item to layer with. There were also pieces inspired by wetsuits in Off-White’s lookbook. Pockets were among a staple for Resort 2020 and Virgil gave us an accessory to look forward to — a utility-style belt with multiple pouches, an upgrade from the single belt bag that we know of today.

When it comes down to color and fabrics, it was very rich with embellishments. Jacquard, Velour and Beaded Embroidery. Multicultural inspiration walked the runways with the use of embellishment and prints. While majority of the fabric was heavier, it seemed to be balanced off by lightweight fabrics. Prada was among one to display the balance along with print overload for lightweight fabrics. Plaid was among a popular choice for tailored suits, blazers, and oversized trouser shorts.

The Gucci show was notable for delivering Rustic Bohemian, rich vintage looks with a renaissance touch. Alessandro Michele’s mastery displayed theatrics, historic inspiration and even had a political nod while giving us a like bit hippie.

And without mention Moschino is in its own lane for being different and fun. Featuring a nostalgic scary-movie inspired collection for Resort 2020. One of my favorite looks featured bright green Frankenstein inspired leather two-piece, accessorized with a mini black cat bag.

If there’s one thing, it is that this is just a teaser for what is to follow. Stay tuned!
