2021: The Year of No Resolutions

Why this will be the year I end the bullshit that resolutions are

There was no warning for what we would face globally and as individuals. March changed the course of history; vacations, weddings, holidays, conferences, concerts all cancelled. And there is still so much unpredictability heading into the new year. If there’s one thing we learned, it’s that tomorrow is not guaranteed.

Reflecting on where I started the year, I wanted to focus on a healthy lifestyle and committing to becoming vegetarian. Hours after sharing my goals for the year, I had a compound ankle fracture. (If that wasn’t a foreshadow of the year ahead). But surprisingly I was successful with it. And I think it’s because it was not a rigid goal or resolution. Being at home there was challenges with working out but on the other hand, there were opportunities encouraging me to play with cooking. In the end, I unexpectedly got back into a regular yoga practice with a studio doing online classes and I am so grateful.

I will not be setting a single resolution for 2021 but rather set an intention or mantra, inviting the idea of a thought to lead the way. Something to stay focused on throughout the year and that could be something as simple as survive.

“A world where people aren’t afraid to stand up and speak up for what is right and fight for what they believe in. I just hope that my vision and passion for the environment and for those I love, continue to connect me to the right people and places along the way.” New Year, New Goals. Jan. 16, 2020

I can’t write a story reflecting on 2020 without acknowledging that it brought healthcare, racial, environmental, and financial issues all to the table. Shortly after coming to terms with the reality of our crumbling world, we faced a pivotal movement for Black Lives Matter. A standard for what would be accepted by our society was drawn. A lot of high hopes for the upcoming year to return to a life we once recognized but we must recognize the faults of those in power, learn and grow. The highest voter turn out in over a century, soon the president and madam vice president will be taking office.

For me staying positive was not an easy bid this year but in the end I was able to come up with a list of positives that the year brought. I want for this moment in time to lead to a stronger version of myself. This year my mantra will be to focus on positive creative energies, prosperity, health, love and happiness. Positive energy at minimum for myself and for those around me daily.

Can you think of a mantra or an intention for the year ahead? I would love to hear them!
