Futuristic Romantic Goth

Grunge is the new black for fall 2020

Autumn/Winter Ready-To-Wear 2020 fashion week wrapped up just around the time the world started to shut down because of COVID19. Jumping ahead to the fall, we are still navigating this apocalyptic resemblance reality. Did the designers foresee the year we would endure?

Goth and grunge was a top trend on runway seen taking various transformations. Spotted among the Givenchy, Balenciaga, and Valentino runway was black head to toe, while touches of lace, leather, and plenty of ancient vampire-esque nods were prominent.

Balenciaga opened the show with a dramatic turtleneck long sleeve gown. Models walked a flooded runway mirroring the graphic ceiling in minimal black (close to 3/4 of the looks were black) creating an religious apocalyptic scene. Among the show were sharp shoulders and matrix meets moto.

Romantic touches of lace and renaissance layered gowns of tule with this season’s go to accessory: a leather harness, was seen on Gucci’s Fall 2020 RTW. Anna Sui inspired by darkness and witches; executed romantic goth styling effortlessly, with velour, dark lips, and the finest of lace frill.

Maybe BDSM is more like your kind of romance, Junya Watanabe took a more punk goth approach using bondage straps layered over as an accessory. Alexander McQueen also used a similar texture with leather to create color blocking and mixed in the leather harness. (I have been wanting a leather trench since last year and the Alexander McQueen’s black leather trench with lace appliqué made that desire even stronger).

Bella Hadid walked Rodarte in a white and red polka dot dress sporting a white birdcage veil and delicate white fishnet mesh gloves. A number of looks drew inspiration from vampire and spider queen with silk hooded capes and cobweb embellishments. But it was the dark lip color that truly gave the look that goth feel even when it was paired with a cheerful print.
